Deadly Tornadoes Strike Nashville Area

When one thinks of where a tornado would strike, one usually thinks of farms, with the storm churning up fields or perhaps leveling a barn. But on occasion, a tornado can rip through a city. That’s exactly what happened in Nashville, Tennessee in the predawn hours Tuesday morning, as multiple tornadoes hit the city and surrounding areas, including an EF3 that tracked for over 60 miles. But that was not even the strongest tornado that touched down, as an EF4 tornado carved a path through Smith County, TN.

The destruction was undeniable. Tragically, the storms claimed at least 25 lives as they ravaged the heavily-populated area. Scores of homes and businesses were severely damaged or destroyed. Overturned tractor-trailers blocked portions of Interstates 24 and 40. These conditions prompted Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to declare a state of emergency.

While more rain and thunderstorms are expected over the southeastern United States over the next two days, the threat for severe weather is expected to remain well to the south of Nashville during that time.
