Jet Streak Causes Record Fast Flight from New York to London
A typical flight time from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport and London’s Heathrow Airport is listed as 6 hours and 40 minutes. But passengers on British Airways Flight 112 made the trip in just 4 hours and 56 minutes on Sunday. Not only was that trip time nearly 28% shorter than average, it broke the previous record flight time of 5 hours and 13 minutes between the two airports.

The plane was able to achieve that time thanks to a jet streak of more than 260mph that traveled eastward towards London. This allowed the aircraft to achieve a top speed of 825mph, much faster than a typical speed of about 655mph. That same jet streak caused flights traveling westward towards New York be delayed by more than an hour and a half thanks to the resulting headwinds.
