Major Late Season Tornado Outbreak Around Dallas

A strong storm system resulted a major late season tornado outbreak in the Dallas area. There were 9 confirmed tornadoes on Sunday night, October 20, including 2 in Dallas County. While tornadoes are not unusual in this region, the number of tornadoes and intensity is not common for late October. The strongest of the tornadoes, which occurred in North Dallas, was rated at an EF-3 with estimated winds of 140 mph. This tornado resulted in significant damage to the North Dallas area. The tornado blew roofs off of homes, knocked down trees and power lines, and flipped over cars.

In total, nearly 130,000 customers were without power at the peak of these storms on Sunday night into Monday. As of today, the area is slowly trying to return to normal as crews assess the damage that was done. Fortunately for the battered region, quiet weather is expected into Thursday before the next chance of thunderstorms comes late Thursday into Friday. Those storms are not expected to be anywhere near as intense.
