Severe Storms Hit Wilkes-Barre, PA Wednesday Night

Just under one month after an EF1 tornado struck Canaan Township in northeastern Pennsylvania, more severe weather struck that region.  This time, it was Wilkes-Barre that bore the brunt of the storms.  The Arena Hub Plaza, which includes a Barnes and Noble, a Target, a Pet Smart, and a Panera Bread, was severely damaged, with parts of roofs ripped off, downed power lines, and even a propane gas leak.  Though authorities have reported six injuries as a result of the storms, fortunately there have been no fatalities as of this writing.  The National Weather Service in Binghamton, New York is planning to send a survey team to the area on Friday to determine if a tornado touched down.

Though the storms later tracked eastward into New Jersey and towards New York City, they weakened significantly as they moved eastward and produced just a period of rain and much lighter winds there.
