Weather Continues to Wreak Havoc on Baseball
This past weekend had scheduled baseball games in several cold-weather cities, but Mother Nature had other ideas, as a storm brought yet more wintry weather to the northern United States. The Minneapolis-St. Paul was especially hard-hit, as 15.8 inches of snow fell at the airport over the weekend. It was the 12th largest snowstorm in Twin Cities’ history and the largest since December 2010. The snow forced the postponement of the final three games of the Minnesota’ Twins’ four-game home series vs. the Chicago White Sox. The postponed games are now scheduled to be played on June 5th, August 20th, and September 28th. Other teams, too, lost multiple games to weather over the weekend. The Detroit Tigers saw all three games of their home series vs. the New York Yankees postponed due to rain and freezing rain.

Even stadiums with retractable roofs didn’t necessarily provide teams with relief from winter’s latest punch. Inside of the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada, ice fell through a hole in the stadium’s roof, forcing the postponement of Monday’s Blue Jays game vs. the Kansas City Royals. The hole in the roof came as a result of ice falling from the nearby CN Tower.
In total, 24 Major League Baseball games have been postponed to a later date so far this season, the highest total of postponements before May 1st since 2007, when there were 26.
