Record April Cold in Midwest, Northeast
Winter has been hanging tough in many parts of the country so far this spring, especially in the Upper Midwest. Stambaugh, Michigan, located in the state’s Upper Peninsula, reached a bone-chilling -24 degrees on the morning of April 8th. Initially, this was believed to be a record-low temperature for Michigan during the month of April, but it was later discovered that Humboldt, Michigan dipped to -30 degrees on April 1, 1923. Minnesota also experienced record cold in recent days, with Embarras recording a low temperature of -10 degrees on April 8th, while Hibbing dropped to -4 degrees that same morning. The daytime hours provided little relief in Minnesota, as the game-time temperature at the Twins’ baseball game on April 7th was 27 degrees, which was the coldest game-time temperature of any outdoor Twins’ game.

The unseasonably cold temperatures also impacted the northeastern states at the same time, though the temperatures were not as frigid as those seen further west. Albany, New York’s temperature fell to 19 degrees on the morning of April 8th, which tied a record from 1982. Nearby Glens Falls, New York dipped to 17 degrees that morning, which broke the old record of 19 degrees set back in 1995. Hartford, Connecticut, meanwhile, dropped to 23 degrees that same morning, which tied a record from 1977.
