Third March Nor’Easter Hits Storm Weary Northeast
Yet another powerful nor’easter, the third one in less than two weeks, pummeled the northeastern United States this week with more heavy snow and more strong winds. This time, New England bore the brunt of the storm with over two feet of snow in northern Rhode Island and northeastern Massachusetts as well as much of New Hampshire and Maine, while hurricane-force wind gusts were experienced over Cape Cod. Some of the highest snow totals include Wilmington, MA with 31.0 inches, Holden, ME with 30.0 inches, Deerfield, NH with 28.6 inches, and North Foster, RI with 25.1 inches of snow. Eastern Long Island also received heavy snow as Southampton, NY reported 18.3 inches of snow.
With the rapid succession of nor’easters, many locations in the northeast are approaching historically high snowfall totals for the month of March at the halfway point of the month. As of midnight on March 14th, Albany, NY had measured 36.0 inches of snow for March 2018. This total is the third largest on record for the month of March, and the highest total since 37.0 inches was recorded in March 1916. This month is also Albany’s snowiest winter month since January 1994 had 42.0 inches of snow. Worcester, MA, meanwhile, has reported 40.0 inches of snow this month, making it the second snowiest March on record, behind 44.1 inches set in March 1993. The last time Worcester had a snowier winter month was in February 2015 when it measured 53.4 inches of snow.
