Drier than Normal Conditions in Parts of the Northeast
Although the period of November 2017-January 2018 was quite cold across the Northeastern United States, it was also drier than normal for much of the region. New York City, for example, recorded just 5.97 inches of liquid between November 1, 2017 and January 31, 2018, which was 5.70 inches below average for that period. Drought worries for the spring were starting to creep in, as shown on the drought monitor below.
However, the month of February has changed all of that. Through the first 15 days of February, New York City has already recorded 4.07 inches of liquid – 2.47 inches ahead of normal – and more rain was falling as of this writing. If New York City receives 1.97 more inches of liquid before the end of February, this February would break into the Top 10 wettest Februaries dating back to 1869.
