Coldest Air so Far This Season expected for Central & Eastern U.S.
It may only be November, but a blast of winter is poised to target the central United States for the second half of this week and spread to the eastern States this weekend and next week. The latest weather models are predicting temperatures at 850 millibars between -10 and -20 degrees Celsius over much of the north-central and northeastern United States early next week. This will support multiple days of below freezing high temperatures for cities such as Bismarck, North Dakota and the Twin Cities of Minnesota, where average high temperatures are still in the 40s Fahrenheit. By the middle of next week, the season’s first freeze will be possible for the major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor.

With the cold blast will come multiple threats of snow, especially for the traditionally favored lake-effect snow belts. But even the non-lake effect snow regions of the Upper Midwest will have the threat of accumulating snow for Thursday and Friday of this week. Longer range models indicate parts of the interior east of the Appalachian Mountains may get in on the snow action next week, but details remain uncertain at this time.
