Northeast U.S. Suffers Rare Late-Season Tornado Outbreak

The calendar may read October, but Mother Nature still had more severe weather up her sleeve for the northeastern United States. A rare late-season tornado outbreak struck the region Tuesday, with 18 confirmed tornadoes in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut that day. Thirteen of the tornadoes touched down in Pennsylvania, including two EF2 tornadoes, one of which severely damaged a senior living facility near Conneautville, PA.

There were three spin ups in New York State on Tuesday, one of which was an EF0 that touched down in Ronkonkoma, NY. It was the first time since records have been kept that a tornado touched down in Suffolk County, NY during the month of October. In Connecticut, an EF1 tornado struck New Canaan and knocked down a tree on the northbound side of the Merritt Parkway, closing the busy road for hours.

Very heavy rainfall also struck the region Tuesday, which added to the already soaked ground from previous heavy rainfall events. 4.20 inches of rain were measured in Mount Kisco, NY while Fairfield, CT reported 3.95 inches of rainfall. These same areas received 3-6 inches of rain just last week from the remnants of Hurricane Florence. Fortunately for the waterlogged region, dry weather is expected to prevail for the next several days.
