Tornadoes Strike Fishers Island, Coastal New England
Even though the calendar will turn to November shortly, more severe weather struck portions of coastal southern New England as well as Fisher’s Island, NY on Monday morning. Three tornadoes struck the area during that time. One began as a waterspout over eastern Long Island Sound just after sunrise Monday before making landfall as a tornado on Fishers Island. The tornado was classified as an EF-1, knocked down trees and power lines and damaged numerous homes on the island. It was also the first tornado on the island since records began in 1950. Shortly after the Fishers Island tornado lifted, another one touched down in nearby North Stonington, CT, also an EF0. It was just the third tornado to form in New London County, CT at all since 1950. Later that morning, yet another EF0 tornado touched down in Woods Hole, MA, and damaged portions of the Woods Hole Golf Club.

These tornadoes came just six days after EF1 tornadoes struck North Providence, RI and Norton, MA. While a cold front is expected to bring more rain to the area towards the end of this week, severe weather is not expected with this new system.
