Coldest Air of Season So Far to Invade Northeast U.S. This Week
After a summer and early fall that featured much warmer than normal conditions over much of the northeastern United States, Mother Nature has decided to flip the seasonal switch on the region. Multiple shots of much below normal temperatures are expected over the northeastern United States through the remainder of October. One such shot of cold air is expected to arrive for Thursday with 850mb temperatures approaching -10 degrees Celsius. This type of air mass supports high temperatures in the 40s Fahrenheit where average high temperatures are still in the lower 60s. Frost and freezes are also expected outside of the coastal urban centers, as many locations are expected to dip into the 20s across much of the interior northeast.

The cold temperatures are also expected to trigger lake effect precipitation as the air blows over the warmer waters of the Great Lakes. While a major snowfall is not expected this week, some light snowfall accumulations will be possible in the higher elevations of Upstate New York and Northern New England by Thursday.
